Stairs & Railings

What We Build

Stairs and railings are the most code-scrutinized part of any deck project in Minnesota. The IRC has specific requirements for riser height, tread depth, post spacing, baluster gap, and handrail continuity — and city inspectors check all of it.

We build stair and railing systems to spec the first time, which means inspections pass and you don't get a callback two years later because a post shifts or a railing fails the wiggle test. The difference is in how the post bases are set, how the stringers are connected to the rim joist, and whether the railing manufacturer's load ratings are actually followed.

Aluminum Railing

Most Popular

Powder-coated aluminum is the dominant choice in the west metro for a reason: it's the most low-maintenance, most code-friendly, and most durable option. Westbury aluminum systems come in a range of finishes — black, white, bronze, and more — and carry a lifetime structural warranty. Zero rust, zero rot, zero repainting.

Cable Rail

Contemporary Look

Horizontal stainless steel cables maximize sightlines from your deck — ideal for lots with yard views, water views, or wooded backdrops. Minnesota code allows cable rail when tension and spacing are maintained. We tension-test every cable run and can provide maintenance guidance for keeping them looking sharp long-term.

Cedar & Wood Railing

Classic Choice

Cedar railing brings the warmth and character of natural wood. It requires annual sealing to prevent checking and graying, but the aesthetics are hard to beat on a cedar deck build. We use clear-grade cedar or pressure-treated lumber depending on budget and preference.

Single & Double Stair Systems

Any Configuration

Simple single-run stairs, double stair systems for wide decks, corner stairs, curved stringers — we build all configurations. Every stair system is built from scratch with new stringers, not patch-cuts on existing framing. Composite treads or PT treads depending on the rest of your build.

Full resurfacing of an existing elevated deck — stripped down to the frame, rebuilt with TimberTech composite decking in a warm natural tone. The double stair system was completely rebuilt from the stringers up. Westbury aluminum railing installed throughout, code-compliant post spacing, and a clean transition to the yard.

The homeowner wanted something that looked high-end, needed zero maintenance, and held up through Minnesota winters. That's exactly what TimberTech + aluminum delivers — 25-year fade warranty, no sealing, no staining, no rotting.

The Process

From assessment to inspection

01

Site Assessment

We measure the existing deck, note the grade change, and assess the existing stair and railing condition. If we're doing a standalone stair or railing project, this is where we figure out what stays and what goes.

02

Design & Code Review

We map the stair run and riser heights, confirm post spacing per manufacturer specs, and check against current MN code. Everything gets confirmed before a single material is ordered.

03

Material Order

Materials are ordered and delivered to your site. Aluminum railing systems typically arrive within a week. Stair stringers and treads are cut to spec.

04

Installation & Inspection

Build day: stringers set, treads installed, railing system mounted and tensioned or secured. Inspection scheduled. Most stair and railing projects are done in 1–3 days.

FAQ

Stairs & Railings Questions

Do deck stairs require a permit in Minnesota?
Yes — any stair system attached to a deck that requires a permit will include stair inspections. Minnesota building code is specific about tread depth, riser height, handrail height, and post spacing. We pull every permit and pass every inspection.
What railing material lasts longest in Minnesota winters?
Aluminum outlasts everything. Powder-coated aluminum is corrosion-proof, won't splinter or rot, and holds its color indefinitely. It's also the strongest option for post spacing compliance. Cable rail is close behind but requires occasional cable tensioning. Wood needs annual maintenance to stay looking good.
What's required for handrail height in Minnesota?
Minnesota follows the IRC: handrail height must be 34–38 inches measured vertically from the stair tread nosing. Deck guards (the top rail) must be 36 inches minimum for decks under 30 inches off grade, and 42 inches for anything higher. We design every system to these specs from the start.
How do you handle post spacing for aluminum railing?
Westbury aluminum railing systems are engineered and tested to specific post spacing — typically 6–8 feet on center depending on infill style. We follow the manufacturer specs and MN building code, whichever is more restrictive, to ensure a railing that passes inspection and holds up to real-world loading.
How long does a stair and railing project take?
A standalone stair rebuild with new railing typically runs 1–3 days depending on complexity. A full railing system on an existing deck is usually 1–2 days. Combined with a deck build, stairs and railings add 1–2 days to the overall timeline.
