What We Build

Exterior Renovations

A deck is rarely the only project a yard needs. Most of the clients we work with eventually want to extend the outdoor living space beyond the deck platform — a pergola for shade, a privacy fence to separate from the neighbor, or a covered structure that makes the space usable in shoulder seasons.

Exterior renovations require the same permitting knowledge, structural discipline, and material judgment as deck builds. We bring the same zero-headache approach to every project — one contractor, one quote, permit handled.

Pergolas & Shade Structures

Attached or freestanding, cedar or composite, open-top or with louvered panels — we design and build pergolas that extend your outdoor living space and match your home aesthetically. Built with the same structural rigor as our deck framing.

Privacy Fencing

Cedar, composite, pressure-treated, or aluminum privacy fencing. We handle the permit, set posts below frost depth, and build fence panels that stay plumb and gap-free through Minnesota winters. Any length, any style.

Siding & Exterior Framing

Rotted siding sections, compromised sheathing, failed exterior wall framing — we repair it with matching or better materials. If your exterior wall is failing adjacent to a deck or porch, we can address both in a single project.

Attached Outdoor Structures

Covered porches, storage additions, outdoor utility structures — exterior structures that need to integrate with your home's existing framing. We pull the permit, engineer the connection to the house, and build it to last.

Our Approach

How We Approach Exterior Projects

Integrated Design

Every exterior renovation is designed to match your home and existing deck aesthetically. We don't build additions that look like afterthoughts.

MN Climate Engineering

Material choices and structural details are made for Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycle, UV load, and snow weight requirements. Nothing we build is designed for a warmer climate and adapted for MN.

Permit Expertise

Exterior renovations often fall into permit gray areas. We know the rules in each municipality we serve and handle every permit application, inspection, and sign-off.

FAQ

Exterior Renovation Questions

What counts as an 'exterior renovation'?
Anything attached to or directly adjacent to your home's exterior that isn't a deck platform: pergolas, shade structures, privacy fencing, siding repairs, exterior wall framing, attached storage, and outdoor living structures. If you're unsure whether your project falls in our scope, call — we'll tell you straight.
Do exterior renovation projects require permits in Minnesota?
It depends on the project. Attached pergolas and large shade structures typically require permits. Privacy fencing over 6 feet requires a permit in most Twin Cities municipalities. Siding repair under a certain square footage threshold often doesn't. We assess the permit requirements during your site visit and handle everything that's needed.
How much does a pergola cost?
Pergola cost varies significantly by size, material, and attachment type. A cedar freestanding pergola runs $5,000–$15,000 for most residential sizes. Attached pergolas with composite members and a proper footings are $8,000–$25,000+. We scope pergola projects the same way as deck builds: site visit, written quote, no surprises.
What fencing materials do you work with?
We build privacy fencing in cedar, pressure-treated pine, composite (low maintenance), and aluminum. Cedar is the most popular for aesthetics and privacy. Composite is the best choice for zero long-term maintenance. Aluminum is ideal for ornamental fencing where you want visibility. All styles can be permitted and inspected.
Can you match existing exterior materials on a repair?
Yes. For siding repairs, we source material that matches the existing profile as closely as possible. For cedar additions adjacent to existing cedar structures, we match the species and grade. We'll tell you honestly if a perfect match isn't achievable before we start.
